EM Retired 2014 Fall Conference

Education Minnesota Retired Fall Conference 2014

Popular demand brought back Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge as the location for the Education Minnesota Fall Conference. This conference has a fantastic combination of having sessions that educate on important topics to retirees, speakers that entertain members, and time for individuals to gather in small groups to talk to each other and learn from each other.

This year the educational sessions were: An update on the last legislative session by Jodee Buhr, An emotional wellness session by Jim Keenan, A health insurance from Tim Schatz of the MN Health Insurance Network, the State of Economy by Kent Schutte, an Elections Update from James Haggar, and a TRA update by Laurie Hacking the TRA Executive Director. Some of these topics are included every year because members attending have indicated they want and need to be updated. This is especially noted with the topic of TRA and pension benefits as well as legislative and elections information. The emotional wellness was a new information session which gave very interesting ways to look at understanding ourselves, how we communicate and things to consider for change. The health insurance network information gave important information for people to consider when choosing a health insurance company.

Entertainment was provided with a new Doug Ohman presentation on projects built in Minnesota with the New Deal. Dave Nimmer, recently retired journalist, talked about how to live as a senior citizen with its rewards and challenges. There was again a pontoon ride around the lake to view the wildlife. One of the cabins was opened up for a social with time to communicate with each other. Also a bonfire provided a location to talk with each other.

If you have never attended an Education Minnesota Retired meeting or Conference, we invite you to come. You will find it worthwhile!
